Maureen et moi, nous avons fait du shopping, et on s'a rassemblé avec les autres pour le dîner à «Leon de Bruxelles» pour les moules. On a essayé arriver à La Tour Eiffel pour le dernier ascenseur, mais on l'a manqué encore. Mais on peut voir La Tour Eiffel allumée et clignotante. Alors, Maureen a pratiqué les claquettes, comme elle a voulu faire depuis le début de notre voyage, devant La Tour Eiffel.
[Maureen and I went shopping one last time and met up with everyone else for dinner at Leon de Bruxelles for mussels. We tried to catch the elevator at the Eiffel Tower but just missed it again. We did get to see it illuminated and blinking, though. Then Maureen did her tap practice that she's been preparing for since the beginning of the trip, in front of the Eiffel Tower.]

On a passé le plus du jour avec dégustation des vins à Marché aux Vins et Patriarche Père et Fils. On a acheté de nourriture dans la ville pour le déjeuner et le dîner, notamment «bœuf Bourguignon», une spécialité régionale. Maureen, elle a pratiqué les claquettes dans la ville.
[We spent most of the day wine tasting at Marché aux Vins and Patriarche Père et Fils. We gathered food from the town for both lunch and dinner, including regional specialty beef Burgundy. Maureen did some tap practice in the town.]

On a visité Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, la ville où le film Le Chocolat a été tourné. Autrement, il n'y avait pas quelque chose spécialement intéressant de cette ville, mais elle est une ville très plaisante. On a mangé le déjeuner à «La Grange», un petit café avec des quiches. On a visité aussi un petit magasin qui vend leurs propres bonbons d'anis.
On a continué à conduire à Beaune pour y rester pour quelques jours. On a mangé un dîner excellent à «Le Conty», avec une soupe de champignons, une entrée de fromage frais, et un plat de poisson et un plat de risotto, et des prixs raisonnables.
[We visited Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, the town where Chocolat was filmed. Otherwise, there wasn't anything particularly interesting about it, but it's a pleasant little town. We ate lunch at La Grange, a little country café with quiches. We also visited a small shop that sells their own anise candy.
We drove on to Beaune to stay for a few days. We had an excellent dinner at Le Conty, with a mushroom soup, a soft cheese entrée, a fish plate and risotto plate, and reasonable prices.]

On a parti Bayeux pour Chartres après passer au supermarché pour des sandwichs. Il y a une autre Cathedrale de Notre Dame; cette cathedrale présent une relique, le voile de la Vierge. Il y a aussi un clocher, lequel seulement Maureen a eu courage à monter (pour un prix). Alors nous avons parti Chartres à notre arrêt le plus court, Saint-Symphorien. On a resté et mangé un dîner trop cher au Château d'Esclimont.
[We left Bayeux for Chartres, first stopping by a supermarket to get some sandwiches. There was another Cathedrale de Notre Dame, this one featuring a relic, the veil of the Virgin Mary. There was also a bell tower, which only Maureen was brave enough to ascend (for a fee). We then went just outside Chartres to our shortest overnight stop, Saint-Symphorien. We stayed and had an expensive dinner at the Château d'Esclimont.]

On a visité les plages de «Jour J» avec une excursion par van du Mémorial de Caen. Notre conducteur, Francis, a été très expert à sujet de «Jour J», bien sûr. On a vu un canon allemand qui est toujours entier, encerclé par des abri enterré, sur une mesa en haute de la plage. Ensuite on a visité le mémorial américain, duquel le cimetière a été tourné in Saving Private Ryan. Quelques pierres tombales n'ont pas un nom, et il y avait aussi un mur qui énumére des soldats su être manquants. Quand un corps est trouvé ou identifié, il en est indiqué sur le mur, et la pierre tombale est gravée. Quelques corps ont été trouvé cette année. Alors, on a visité les plages vraies, et on y a marché. Il y avait des autre petits mémorials au bord de route. À la fin, on a vu une falaise avec des autres canons près des entonnoirs créé par le bombardement des Alliés.
Après quel jour grave, on s'a détendu au Château. Maureen et Ben et moi, nous avons exploré dehors du Château, et on a trouvé un dîner plaisant de «Presto Pizza», un camion avec une cuisine où le chef aimable a cuit un pizza pendant qu'on attend. Alors, on a joué au tennis au Château.
[We visited the D-Day beaches with a van tour from the Caen Memorial. Our driver, Francis, was very knowledgeable on D-Day, of course. We first saw a German gun turret that was still intact, surrounded by bunkers, on a mesa inland of the beach. Then we visited the American Memorial, the cemetery of which was filmed in Saving Private Ryan. Some of the tombstones were unnamed, and there was also a wall of known missing soldiers. When a body is found or identified, it is indicated next to the name on the wall, and the grave is then marked. Some bodies were actually found as recently as this year. Then we drove to the actual beaches and stood on them. There were other small memorials on the side of the road. Lastly, we saw a cliff with more turrets surrounded by large craters from Allied bombing.
After such a heavy day, we relaxed at the Château. Maureen and Ben and I explored outside the Château and found a pleasant dinner from a pizza truck, "Presto Pizza", where the nice chef made us a pizza while we waited. Then we played tennis at the Château.]

On a visité Le Mémorial de Caen de «Jour J». Le musée est une vitrine de l'histoire des événements avant de la seconde guerre mondiale. Cet musée s'a présenté comme un musée de la paix, et aussi il se distingue par une galerie des gagnants du prix Nobel entre le musée principal et les jardins. Le musée offre aussi une excursion par van aux plages de «Jour J», lequel on va faire demain.
On a mangé un bon déjeuner à «Banette», qui offre des sandwichs, des quiches, et des desserts. Ensuite, on est parti pour le Mont St-Michel, la ville créé sur une montagne, jusqu'au sommet. On a prendu le chemin élevé en haut des pièges à touristes, alors on a visité la grande Abbaye au sommet. Ensuite, on a mangé le dîner à «La Confiance», qui a semblé raisonnable, notamment pour les grandes omelettes. Les omelettes s'ont révélées plus petites que ceux dans le restaurant qui en spécialise, et le service a été pauvre, mais les moules ont été bonnes.
[We visited the Caen Memorial of D-Day. The museum is a showcase of the history of events leading up to World War II. This war museum is billed as a museum of peace and even features a Nobel Prize gallery between the main museum and the gardens. The museum also offers a van tour of various D-Day sites, which we will take tomorrow.
We had a nice lunch at Banette, a sandwich place with quiches and desserts. Then we headed out to Le Mont St-Michel, the city built on most of the surface of a mountain, all the way to the top. We took the elevated path over the tourist trap section, then we toured the large Abbey at the top. After that, we had dinner at La Confiance, which seemed like the most reasonable, especially for the large omelettes. The omelettes turned out to be smaller than the ones at the place that specialized in them, and the service that day was below expectations, but the mussels were good.]

Alors, tout les six, nous sommes partis de Paris. On a loué une voiture, un van qui contient tout les six et nos valises. Notre premier arrêt a été Honfleur, un port avec beaucoup de restaurants avec de la marée et des fruits de mer. On a mangé le déjeuner à «L'Hippocampe» avec des fruits de mer très excellents. On a continué à conduire à notre ville suivante, Bayeux. On a enregistré au Château Bellefontaine et mangé le dîner à «Le Pommier», avec plus de fruits de mer excellents! Jusqu'ici, c'était le jour, le meilleur pour la grande cuisine!
[Finally, the six of us left Paris. We rented a van that holds all six of us and our bags. Our first stop was Honfleur, a port town with lots of seafood restaurants. We had lunch at "L'Hippocampe" with excellent seafood. We continued driving to our next city, Bayeux. We check into Château Bellefontaine and ate dinner at "Le Pommier", with even more excellent seafood! So far this was the best day for eating out!]

On a prendu le train RER à Versailles, et on a visité le tout. Le palais est énorme, et on a visité les jardins, Le Grand Trianon, et Le Petit Trianon, après lequel on a été perdu dans la partie comme une ville, parce que le GPS de Ben, il n'a pas dit d'un fossé qui encercle la ville. Alors, on a prendu la navette à l'entrée. On a mangé le déjeuner à Brasserie du Théâtre en dehors de la terre du palais. Notre nourriture a été bonne, mais les plusieurs semblent commander «steak tartare», que j'ai peur d'essayer. Mais cet restaurant est probablement l'endroit pour le commander si les plusieurs retournent pour le manger, après ne pas avoir mal la dernière fois. Quand on a retourné à l'hôtel, on a eu une aventure de laverie. On pourrait avoir économiser par faire la lessive à l'hôtel au lieu de la laverie dehors.
Maureen at moi, nous a essayé visiter le Quartier Latin encore, cette fois la vraie partie. Apparemment quand on y a visité la dernière dois avec Anita, ça, c'était une piège à touristes. Pour le plus de restaurants, la cuisine a été fermé, alors on a bu des boissons à «Cafe Panis».
[We took the RER train to Versailles and toured the whole thing. The palace is enormous, and we saw the gardens and both the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon, after which we got lost in the town part, due to Ben's GPS lacking the mention of a moat surrounding the town. So we took the tram back to the entrance. We had lunch at Brasserie du Théâtre just outside of the palace grounds. Our food was good, but a lot of people seemed to order the steak tartare, which I dare not try. But this restaurant is probably the place to get it if people come back for it, presumably having not gotten sick the previous time. When we got back to our hotel, we had an interesting adventure doing laundry. We could have saved a lot of trouble by doing it at the hotel instead of the slightly cheaper place just outside.
Maureen and I tried to visit the Latin Quarter again, this time the real part. It turns out where we went before with Anita was just the tourist trap part of it. Most of the restaurants' kitchens were closed by the time we got there, so we just had drinks at Cafe Panis.]

On a regardé du tennis à Roland Garros, seulement les matchs de qualification. On n'a pas vu quelqu'un célèbre, parce qu'on ne dois pas jouer les matchs de qualification, mais on a apprécié le regarder néanmoins. Ensuite on a regardé d'art impressionniste au Musée d'Orsay et des sculptures au Musée Rodin, tous les deux notre musées preférés de Paris. On a mangé un dîner à Chanthaboury un restaurant thailandais près de notre hôtel, où Anita, Bob, et Natalie, ils sont arrivé tout de suite après nous a été arrivés. La reunion a été involontaire.
[Maureen and Ben and I watched tennis (just qualifying matches) at Roland Garros. We didn't see anyone famous, since they don't need to play qualifying matches, but it was fun to watch nonetheless. Then we saw some impressionist art at the Musée d'Orsay and sculptures at the Musée Rodin, both our favorite museums in Paris. We ate dinner at Chanthaboury, a Thai restaurant near our hotel, where Anita, Bob, and Natalie happened to arrive just after we got there. The meeting was unplanned.]

On a fait du shopping à «Le Bon Marché» et «La Grande Épicerie», ensuite on a mangé un bon déjeuner à «Café Doucet». On a visité vitement l'eglise de St. Sulpice, lequel a été présenté dans «The Da Vinci Code». On a regardé d'art moderne au Centre Pompidou, notamment un court-métrage avec Alan Rickman. On a célébré (officiellement) l'anniversaire de Ben (quoique son anniversaire a été hier) avec le dîner à «La Bourse ou La Vie», où nous tous avons des steaks. Notre steak préféré a été steak au poivre...excellent! Après le dinêr, Maureen et Anita et moi, nous avons allé au Quartier Latin pour des crèpes, et on a prendu les photos dehors de Notre Dame.

On s'a réveillé un peu tard, mais on a visité le jardin public dans Saint-Omer avant de quitter pour Paris encore. Le jardin public a de beaux jardins ébarbés et des statues.
On a retourné à Paris pour l'anniversaire de Ben. Le dîner a été à «Matchan», un restaurant de grillades avec cuisine japonais.
[We woke up a little late, but we visited the famous park in Saint-Omer before leaving for Paris again. The park has nice, manicured gardens and some statues.
We returned to Paris for Ben's birthday. Dinner was at "Matchan", a Japanese bar-and-grill.]

Pendant que Maureen et les autres mariées se préparent, j'ai visité la ville de Saint-Omer avec Jessica et Josh, des amis de Natascha. On a mangé le déjeuner à «Le Florian». Apparemment, «kebab» veut dire "gyros", pas lequel les américains appellent "kabobs."
Le Mariage s'est passé à la Cathedrale de Notre Dame de Saint-Omer. Il y avait cinq autres mariées: trois «bridesmaids» américaines et deux autres mariées qui sont amies de Philippe. La réception a été à «Le Bowling», une combinaison d'une piste de bowling et une salle de réception, notamment un dais pour l'heure de l'apéritif et une salle à manger avec une piste de danse. Bien sûr, le dîner, c'était excellent avec du foie gras (pas mon truc), une salade avec des coquilles, et un steak. Après le dîner, le couple a joué un jeu d'essai à propos de savoir être ensemble; ensuite, ils ont eu leur première danse à 23h59. Il y avait une grande variété de desserts pour livre service, ensuite la danse jusqu'à environ 03h00, seulement interrompue par couper le gâteau de mariage.
[While Maureen and the other bridesmaids were getting ready, I went around Saint-Omer with Natascha's friends Jessica and Josh. We ate lunch at "Le Florian." Apparently, "kebab" means "gyros", not what Americans call "kabobs."
The wedding was at the Cathedrale de Notre Dame de Saint-Omer. There were five witnesses: three bridesmaids and two witnesses from Philippe's side. The reception was at "Le Bowling," a combination bowling alley and reception hall, complete with cocktail area (canopy) and main reception room with dance floor. Dinner, of course, was excellent with foie gras (not my favorite), a salad with scallops, and steak. After dinner, the couple played a funny Q&A game about their relationship, and had their first dance at 11:59pm. There was a wide range of desserts for self-serve, then dancing that lasted till about 3, only interrupted by cake-cutting.]

On a prendu le train à Saint-Omer par Hazebrouck, où les parents de Philippe habitent. Philippe a passé nous prendre à la gare et nous amèner à notre gite du passant. On a été présent à la répétition de mariage à la Catherdrale, ensuite le dîner prénuptial à «Le Medieval».
[We took the train to Saint-Omer, transferring at Hazebrouck, where Philippe's parents live. Philippe picked us up at the train station and brought us to our bed and breakfast. We attended the wedding rehearsal at the Cathedral, then the rehearsal dinner at "Le Medieval."]

On a acheté les billets à Gare du Nord pour être présent au mariage de Natascha et Philippe ce samedi. Ensuite, on a visité le Musée du Louvre. Bien sûr, on a vu La Gioconde et Venus de Milo. On a vu aussi La Vierge aux rochers, lequel a été présenté dans le livre (et le film) «The Da Vinci Code». On a mangé un déjeuner vite à la cafétéria de la Pyramide du Louvre, où il y avait un plat spécial pour les Américains, le steak haché, lequel a été un peu sec et servi avec des frites. Notre dîner à «Le Petit Flore» n'a pas été tant meilleur, mais j'ai commandé une salade de tomate et mozzarella qui a bon goût.
[We bought tickets at Gare du Nord for attending Natascha and Philippe's wedding this Saturday. Then, we visited the Louvre. Of course, we saw the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. We also saw Madonna of the Rocks, which was featured in the book (and movie) The Da Vinci Code. We ate lunch at the Pyramid cafe, where there was a special for Americans, hamburgers, which were a bit dry and served with fries. Our dinner at "Le Petit Flore" wasn't too bad, but I ordered a tomato and mozzarella salad that was good.]

For the next two weeks we'll be in France for Natascha and Philippe's wedding. With Ben's birthday the following day, we decided to make a trip of it. We just took the red eye from LAX to Charles de Gaulle, and I think I'm brushed up enough on my French so here goes...

Aujourd'hui on a visité les Champs-Elysées. On a prendu les photos devant et dans l'Arc de Triomphe. Ensuite, on a visité le magasin de Peugeot. Ce soir on a dîné à Ladurée, un début excellent pour notre voyage. J'ai commandé le thon rouge, et Maureen a commandé le canard. On a fini le soir à La Tour Eiffel, mais on a manqué le dernier ascenseur. Alors, on a seulment prendu des photos. Maureen a voulu pratiquer les claquettes devant La Tour Eiffel, mais elle n'a pas apporté ses chaussures de claquettes. Peut-être la prochaine.
[Today we went to Champs-Elysées. We took pictures in front of and inside the Arc de Triomphe. Then we went to the Peugeot store. Tonight we had dinner at Ladurée, an excellent start to our trip. I ordered a tuna steak, and Maureen ordered the duck confit. We finished the night at the Eiffel Tower, but we missed the last elevator. So, we just took pictures. Maureen wanted to practice tap dancing in front of the Eiffel Tower, but she didn't bring her tap shoes. Maybe next time.]

Yup, work's been pretty busy recently, so I've been lagging. But busy is good these days.
I finally got Metallica's Load and ReLoad when I saw them for decent prices. These albums may not be their best meterial, but they're easy and fun to listen to, and they still maintain the band's overall character.
Also, I finally got a response card for reregistering to vote as an independent. In California, at least, this means "decline to state [party]", and I can vote in primaries for any party that allows such independents to vote in such primaries for that party. Currently these parties are the Dems, Repubs, and the American Independent Party (an actual party, as opposed to no party). I'm pretty sure I'll still vote for Dems since, currently at least, they seem to be more in touch with the voters in the important issues. The real point of my becoming an independent is to be able to engage in real discussions with people "across the aisle" without them accusing me of being partisan. I can truthfully state my independence. And truly, I do want to hear what they have to say, as I did before reregistering. Also, Chris is joining me in declining party affiliation, but more just from being fed up with party politics nowadays. (Chris and I could already have real discussions anyway, but this opens the door for others.) Solidarity!
