The story so far:

Sunday

We started smelling smoke from outside in the early afternoon, then closed the windows and used central air to filter out the fumes indoors. We found out the nearest fire was in Ramona, quite a bit far from here. We went to Mass in La Jolla, where it still smelled smoky (though still far from the fires), and one of our friends (Margot) who lives in Mira Mesa mentioned having the car ready to go in case of evacuation.

Monday

We started getting ready for the day when we found out school was closed, then we saw the news that the fire had not yet been contained. We held off going to work and started gathering important things together. Around 2 pm, we got the notice to evacuate Scripps Ranch. At 3 pm, we packed the rest of our necessary and valuable stuff and left to stay with the Flemings, who offered us a place to stay earlier. The evening was stressful as we watched the news coverage of the fire and saw some spreading of the burn area closer to our house.

Tuesday

The graphic of the burn area had not changed since last checking the news at 3 am. We had breakfast, and during this day's coverage, the news crawl mentioned that our evacuation was just a precaution. In the early afternoon, the mayor announced that our area was one of those where the evacuation was lifted, and we could return to our homes. Maureen and I went to check first. We did some dishes and brought some of our leftovers to the Flemings for dinner. We and the Flemings went to the McKinneys nearby for dinner, then we brought our stuff back home.

We left our nonvaluable necessities in the car in case we have to evacuate again, but as long as the winds don't change, the fire is not spreading in our direction.

Timmy was worried about our house as we left, but he was soon fine playing with Evelyn at the Flemings', as well as with their son Logan. Evelyn was, of course, fine the whole time. Timmy and Evelyn are off school the rest of the week, and I am off work until further notice, since my office is in the Rancho Bernardo area, in the middle of the burn site for the Witch Fire.

Please continue to pray for us, and more so for the victims who lost their homes, were injured, or killed. The current estimate is about 1000 lost homes, projected to be 2000 by the end of the firestorm.

I just found out that the BBC is broadcasting a new Douglas Adams radio drama -- Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency! I heard about the fan project some months ago, but I guess the same production team that did the new HHGG shows went to work on Dirk Gently. Awesome. I'll have to stream that...and also wait for the CD.
